Uggle Internet Web Hosting

In the first part of our tutorial, we learnt how to design the layout of our site and edit images to be used within our site. In this part of the tutorial, we will upload our files to our web space using Internet Explorer. If you are using a dedicated FTP program to upload your files, the principals and settings are the same.

CHECKING OUR BROWSER SETTINGS FOR INTERNET EXPLORER

Before we attempt to upload our newly created website to the web, we first need to check to make sure that our browser is correctly configured. Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools>Internet Options. Now click on the Advanced tab.

Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools>Internet Options. Now click on the Advanced tab.

Now scroll down and ensure that the following entries are ticked (If you are using an FTP program, ensure passive ftp (PASV) is enabled):

Your browser is now configured correctly for you to be able to upload your site.

LOGGING INTO YOUR FTP SITE USING INTERNET EXPLORER

Firstly we need to log into our ftp site. The ftp address for our site is similar to our website address. If our website address is www.mysite.co.uk, our ftp address will be ftp.mysite.co.uk.

Type your ftp address into the address line of your browser, adding ftp:// to the beiginning of the ftp address.:

You should now be presented with a log on window. The username and password are required to login to your ftp site. The username for your ftp site is normally your domain name e.g. mysite.co.uk . The password will automatically be set to the password you submitted during your account acitivation. If you are not sure, or cannot log in, you can check your ftp account details via your control panel. See the FTP tutorial for further details.

In our example, our username is mysite.co.uk and the password is mypassword . Enter your username and password details and select save password if you wish your computer to remember the log in details.

SELECTING THE CORRECT FOLDER TO UPLOAD TO

Now we are logged in to our ftp server, we need to ensure that we upload our files to the correct folder, otherwise our pages will not be displayed. You should now be presented with 3 folders; db, logs and wwwroot:

The 'db' folder is used for databases, the 'logs' folder contains your website log files, and the 'wwwroot' folder contains you website.

Double click on the 'wwwroot' folder.

You should now see a folder named 'cgi-bin' and a file named '_holding.htm'. The '_holding.htm' file is your domain holding page and can be deleted safely or left as your index.htm page will become your home page. (To delete files right click on them and select Delete).

UPLOADING YOUR SITE

Now that we have logged in to our ftp site, we now need to open our website files folder on our pc.

firstly, we need to minimize our ftp window:

Now open the folder containing your website files.

Ensure that you have no other windows open apart from the ftp window which is minimized and your website folder. Now right click on the taskbar and select Tile Windows Vertically:

You should now see the two windows displayed next to each other. In order to upload your site files, simply highlight all of the files (including any image folder etc.) and drag and drop from one window to the other or copy the files from one window and paste into the other. Your files will now be uploaded to your site.

After your files have uploaded, open your browser and enter your domain name into the address bar, your site should now be visible.

Congratulations, you have successfully uploaded your site.

This concludes the tutorial. You should now be able to design the layout of your website, add images and upload your files to your web space.

Return to the support page for other tutorials, including adding a form to your site that is emailed to you when a visitor completes it (send a form via email using jmail).
